Comics are an incredible medium for sharing personal stories, from the comedic to the dramatic and everything in between. Think your life is too "ordinary" to be an "extraordinary" story? Think again! Join Aśka and Georgina Chadderton in this interactive session as they share their top tips for how they drew inspiration from their own lives for their new books.

Children should not be left unattended at this workshop. If you are a parent accompanying a child you do not need to reserve a ticket, but you do need to stay with your child for the duration of the workshop.

Featuring: Georgina Chadderton

Georgina Chadderton (she/they) is an awkward yet friendly Australian cartoonist with an undying love of eating snacks, drinking green tea, patting dogs and playing roller derby. Her debut graphic novel, Oh Brother (Penguin Random House, Feb 2026) is a memoir about growing up as the sibling of someone with complex support needs — as well as being a sweaty teen and negotiating a new friendship. When they’re not making comics, Georgina co-directs Papercuts Comics Festival, runs comics-making workshops and reads comics by their favourite comics makers (basically, it’s all comics, all the time). Georgina lives on Kaurna Yerta (Adelaide) in South Australia with her partner Owen and their distressingly large collection of books.

Featuring: Aśka

Aśka (pronounced ‘Ash-ka’), she/they, is an award-winning cartoonist, energetic visual storyteller, and ex-quantum physicist. A hugely engaging and popular presenter, Aśka is passionate about visual literacy education. Her latest physics-meets-road-trip YA graphic novel, The Friendship Paradox (Allen & Unwin), explores what it’s like to navigate the world and find your place in it when you’re … different. Alongside a catalogue of self-published comics, Aśka has traditionally published more than a dozen books and graphic novels, including the Stonewall Award Notable YA graphic novel Stars in Their Eyes, which was also a CBCA Notable Book and nominated for the Comics Arts Awards of Australia. They are the recipient of multiple government arts grants, prizes, and fellowships. Whenever she can, Aśka travels across Australia, teaching students of all ages how to write with pictures.

This event is part of the annual Perth Comic Arts Festival, a completely free to attend, volunteer run celebration of comics, their creators and readers.
